Mary, a retired school teacher living in San Diego came home one day to find a notice on the front door by her power and light company. They had installed a new “Smart” Meter. Mary did not pay too much attention at first. Her monthly bills were always around $175 per month and she did not expect to see any differences.
Imagine her surprise when her next months bill was over $600! She thought it surely was a mistake and called her electric company and learned that her “smart” meter had allowed the utility to charge different electric rates during peak daytime hours and lower rates during off-peak night time. She had no choice but to pay or face disconnection.
Mary had no idea how to manage the different appliances, or how power hungry they really were. Mary’s friend suggested that she calla local energy efficiency consultant who installed the Envi home energy monitor. Now Mary was able to see how much everything was costing her in real time, and how with some simple changes she was able to drastically reduce her new electricity bills. Using her monitor, Mary’s last bill was slightly below $100.
Our electric bill used to be around $200 per month, then last year it really started to rise, and this year we were getting bills over $500 per month. Same house, same kids, same everything. Now living in South Florida, I knew that air conditioners can become very inefficient over time, but we replaced one system last year, and saw really no savings. We installed the PowerSave device and quickly learned that the pool pump was costing us about $175 per month! Never even thought twice about it. When the pool was installed, we were told that the cost should be around $30 per month. We did not know any better, and nobody told us. So after we learned about the culprit we reprogrammed the pump, and now spend about $75 per month, a $1,200 annual savings on the pool alone!
My friend had the PowerSave monitor installed and was raving about it, so I ordered one and installed it in under ten minutes. We saved nearly $80 the first month, and should pay for the system in under two months. Even more interesting, for the first time, I have been able to involve my daughters who have become energy savers since I give them the difference in their allowance. Everybody wins. By far the best energy efficiency investment I have made.
I drive a Prius, use CFL bulbs, and am very conscious of saving. So when I got the device as a present, I did not think it would save me much. I could not believe that our water heater was such an energy hog. Turns out that every time my wife washes her hands, the monitor showed our usage skyrocketing. I now installed a timer, so that the heater only works at night, and am saving $30 per month.
